Farm-to-Table and Sustainability on Maui

Photo of a table set for four with flowers and plates, overlooking luxury real estate on Maui from a balcony.
What’s the culture of agriculture on Maui?

Maui’s chefs are passionate about letting fresh, seasonal ingredients shine. Farm-to-table restaurants—from oceanfront fine dining to casual roadside cafes—curate menus that highlight the best of local harvests. Farmers markets, such as the Upcountry Farmers Market in Kula or the Maui Swap Meet in Kahului, give you a chance to meet local growers, sample tropical fruits, and take home island-made treats like macadamia nut honey or fresh-baked banana bread. Napili Farmers Market is also a great place on the west side to find local food and other vendors.

Agriculture here isn’t just about food, it’s also about respecting the earth. Many Maui farms use sustainable and regenerative practices—such as organic farming and water conservation techniques—to protect the island’s fragile ecosystem. By supporting local farms, restaurants, and markets, visitors help preserve Maui’s agricultural heritage while enjoying the freshest flavors the island has to offer. Win-win for everyone!

September is Harvest Season!

Photo of breadfruit on a vibrant tree near luxury real estate on Maui.
Did you know that some of Maui’s best harvests happen in September?

When September rolls around, Maui’s vibrant harvest season begins—the season where island flavors are at their peak, the community comes alive with markets and festivals, and visitors can immerse themselves in the unique agricultural of Hawaii.

Early fall on Maui means an abundance of fresh tropical produce. Mangoes are plentiful, avocados are at their best, and breadfruit (known locally as ‘ulu) begins to appear in markets and menus. You might also find passionfruit, dragon fruit, and taro, staples of Hawaiian cuisine that showcase the island’s agricultural diversity.

Supporting Maui's Creatives

How can you best enjoy Maui’s art and artists?

Supporting Maui’s artists doesn’t require a major investment—though taking home a one-of-a-kind painting or sculpture is certainly rewarding. Visitors and residents can attend local art nights, shop at artisan markets, follow and promote artists on social media, and contribute to arts-focused nonprofits, especially those aiding in Lahaina’s recovery. Simply engaging with art—whether by admiring a mural, visiting a gallery, or talking with an artist about their craft—helps sustain this vibrant community.

Living on Maui means immersing yourself in a lifestyle where creativity flows as freely as the ocean breeze. For those who call Maui home, art isn’t just something to observe—it’s the heart of the community. It reflects the island’s stories, values, and aloha spirit. When you make your home on Maui, you become part of this creative story too.

Art Hubs of Maui: Wailuku, Makawao, and Lahaina

Did you know that Maui has a full, vibrant art culture?

Every part of Maui is full of awe-inspiring art, but there are three cities that are considered the major art hubs:

Wailuku got a big surge of creativity over the last few years. This town’s small businesses and coffee shops now share streets with galleries and public murals that reflect the area’s plantation history and Hawaiian legends. Every first Friday, Wailuku hosts “Wailuku First Friday,” an evening of art, food trucks, live music, and local vendor pop-ups that bring the community together.

Makawao, known for its paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) heritage, is the island’s upcountry art destination. Its main street is lined with working art studios, galleries, and boutiques where visitors can watch artists crafting glass, ceramics, and paintings inspired by Maui’s highland. The “Makawao Third Friday Town Party” is a regular celebration of local culture and creativity.

Lahaina was once the heart of Maui’s art scene. While recovery from the 2023 wildfires is still ongoing, the Lahaina art community's spirit remains strong. Local artists and galleries have begun finding temporary homes in nearby towns, and fundraising efforts often feature art auctions and benefit shows. The resilience of Lahaina's creativity is a testament to the enduring power of art in healing and rebuilding.
