A Quick History of Lei Day

Have you ever heard of Lei Day?

Lei Day was first celebrated in 1928, envisioned by poet and writer Don Blanding as a way to recognize the lei as a symbol of Hawaiian culture and the spirit of giving. Fellow writer Grace Tower Warren suggested the slogan “May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii,” and it quickly became an annual celebration island-wide. The lei, made from flowers, leaves, shells, seeds, feathers, and even bones, is more than just a garland—it represents love, friendship, honor, and the spirit of aloha.

On Maui, Lei Day is more than a holiday—it’s a community-wide event filled with pride and tradition. Festivities often take place at Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center, Lahaina Banyan Tree Park (which is still being restored), and various local schools and cultural centers. These events include lei-making demonstrations, hula performances, live music, craft fairs, and the crowning of the Lei Day Court, with a Lei Queen and her royal attendants.

Each year, the celebration also features a theme lei, showcasing a particular flower or plant important to Hawaiian heritage. Competitions for best lei are held, highlighting the creativity and skill of Maui’s lei makers, who craft intricate designs using traditional and modern methods.

Is it okay to visit Lahaina?

Here’s what Robyn from the Maui Luxury Team has to say:

Come and visit, but be respectful. Support our local businesses, such as local shops, restaurants, and food trucks in West Maui, and throughout the entire Island. Be sure to tip your servers, bellmen and women, taxi & Uber drivers and be kind to anyone in the service industry. Other organizations that could always use help are the ones that many don't think about often, but that have been a resource throughout the year—including local cat and dog sanctuaries, Maui food bank, and local hubs that have been serving food to our residents all this time. 

Many of our Lahaina residents are still displaced and scattered across the island. More still have temporarily relocated to the mainland. Every day is a struggle. We have good days and bad days. The 8th of every month has become an anniversary, and soon it will become one full year. Everyone I know that has been directly or indirectly affected by the fires has gone through stages of grief. Many of us repeat the stages over and over. Getting to the final stage of Acceptance has been the most difficult for many. Maybe August 8th, 2024, the one-year anniversary, will help us heal and allow us to accept the reality that Lahaina is not just a place or a town, but a community of people that share their love for one another. Lahaina is unlike any place we have lived in our lives, and it’s all because of the people that share a connection to this beautiful place.

One Year After the Fires

One year later we remember the Lahaina we all once shared, and the people we sadly lost. The Lahaina
fire was one of the biggest losses of life due to a wildfire in American history to date. We lost 102 lovely members of our community, and two are still missing. A beautiful memorial has been created along the Lahaina Bypass lined with crosses, photos, leis, and lights to remember them every day. 

Many Lahaina residents are still anxiously waiting to go back to their properties. Many of the 2,200 homes have been cleared, with gravel being placed on their property once it has passed through the stages of clean up. There are multiple companies that have been working tirelessly day in and day out to clear the debris and free the soil of toxins so all residents can return to their properties and begin rebuilding. For many it seems like a daunting process, but there are organizations that are helping make this process a little bit easier.

Just like other previous disasters on the mainland, people tend to move on and forget about the destruction of the community, as well as the survivors and the struggles they face trying to rebuild their lives. Please remember Lahaina, and the community that has welcomed you in years past. For many visitors, their memories are filled with enjoyable times on Front Street, eating at one of the many restaurants or browsing local shops for souvenirs, but it's the people that make up this wonderful community.

Here are two things you should keep in mind when purchasing property on Maui:

Maui is different from the mainland.

Buying a home on an island 4,000 miles away is a little different than buying a home down the street! To be successful, you’ll need a Maui real estate agent. Your agent can inform you of the market, take you on virtual showings, work within the Maui time zone to get more accomplished, and help you finance through Hawaiian banks and walk you thru the entire buying process. 

There are lots of options! Choose the right location.

Are you looking for an ocean oasis, or a more country feel? What about land with acres to use however you want?

Where you buy not only affects the home’s current and future value, but it also affects your lifestyle. Your agent will be able to conduct a more targeted home search if you outline your preferences in neighborhoods and nearby amenities. Things to Keep in Mind When Purchasing Maui Property, Part 2

Are you unsure what to expect when buying property on Maui?

Here are three things you should keep in mind when purchasing property on Maui:

There are multiple property types.

Maui features condo, single family home, land, investment property, and interval ownership types. While condos and homes may be straightforward, what you can do with land depends on the zoning, investment properties can allow for short-term rentals and require management, and every interval ownership has its terms and conditions. An agent can make sure you understand the requirements for each property. 

There are two types of land tenure.

There are two different forms of land tenure in Hawaii - leasehold and fee simple. If your property is fee simple, you own the property and the land it sits on, similar to real estate on the mainland. If your property is leasehold, however, you own the property but not the land and must pay the landowner lease rent. Also with leasehold, there‘s no guarantee the landowner will renew your lease at the end of the term.

What does financing look like?

We recommend getting pre-qualified with a Hawaiian lender rather than a bank on the mainland to make the process easier.  Sellers on Maui are more comfortable accepting from an offer based in Hawaii. Getting pre-qualified is the first step in owning a property in Hawaii if it is not a cash deal.

You’ll want to:

1. Contact your agent and they can connect you with several lenders, mortgage specialist to start the pre-qualification process. 
2. Fill out a loan application, get pre-qualified and eventually pre-approved
3. Once you are pre-qualified and know the amount, we can set you up to receive listings within your price point so you don’t miss out on any potential dream properties.

There are many Maui organizations that are taking monetary donations, donations of food and supplies, and service volunteers.

Peoples Fund of Maui

The Peoples Fund of Maui was created by Oprah and Dwayne Johnson to provide financial assistance to Maui Community members experiencing the devastating losses from the fires in Lahaina & Kula. 

Maui Food Bank

The Maui Food Bank is always a good organization that helps all year long not just in natural disasters like the wildfires but on a regular basis to those in need on Maui. 

Honokowai Relief Fund

This local organization is providing food, water, medical care, internet access, and more at Honokowai Beach Park. Donations allow them to keep providing the resources the locals need.

Mercy Chefs 

Mercy Chefs is a non-profit organization that is providing hot meals and family grocery boxes that contain produce, canned meat, pasta, rice, and more. A donation of $35 can help provide 10 hot meals, $70 can feed up to 40 people, and $105 feeds up to 60 people. 

Maui Humane Society

The Maui Humane Society is treating animals affected by the fire, providing free airline kennels to families trying to relocate, reuniting owners and lost pets, and providing pet food to those in need. They are taking monetary donations and volunteers if you’re located on the island.

Luckily, we were able to take our kitty, Lila with us. We love our community and feel very thankful and fortunate during this difficult time for our friends and community. The response for Maui has been incredible - please keep supporting where you can. Our house was one of the few that survived this disaster but is currently unlivable. There is no water, no electricity, and the air is very toxic to breathe in our neighborhood. We have been lucky enough to have been staying with friends and are so grateful for their kindness. We are taking it one day at a time and appreciate all your love and support. This is like nothing we have experienced, but we are strong and will make it through this. Sending my condolences to the families who have lost loved ones. Many are still looking for their loved ones to be found safely. Keep you posted as time moves forward.

This condo is a 1-bedroom, 2-bath located across the street from the Kihei boat ramp.  It’s close to many beaches, like Kamaole Beach Park III and Keawakapu Beach, fun shops, and great restaurants. Our clients were looking for a place that they could enjoy during the cold winter months in Iowa. They’re excited to share their condo with family and friends! 

Built in the 1990s, Maui Kamaole has 316 condos within 13 buildings spread across 24 acres. Each building has two levels, with 1-bedroom condos on the ground floor and 2-bedroom condos on the top floor. Around the complex you can find 2 pools, a jacuzzi, tennis court, and barbecue areas.
