3. Twin Falls Trail: A relatively easy, family-friendly hike with multiple waterfall views. This is an excellent option for a light workout combined with refreshing dips in natural pool.

The festival originated as "Save the Whales Day," a grassroots initiative by Maui residents protesting the commercial whaling industry. This movement evolved into World Whale Day, officially established on February 18th, coinciding with the peak of the humpback whale season in Hawaii. Over the years, the event expanded into the Maui Whale Festival, which includes several activities throughout February. 

Cultural Significance

Whales hold a revered place in Hawaiian culture, symbolizing guardianship and guidance. The festival not only highlights the ecological importance of humpback whales, but also honors their role in Native Hawaiian traditions.

Conservation Efforts

The Maui Whale Festival also serves as a platform to promote marine conservation, educating the public on the challenges whales face, such as habitat destruction and climate change. Proceeds from festival events support the Pacific Whale Foundation's research and education programs, nurturing a community dedicated to protecting marine life.

optimistic, noting that while full restoration will take years, the tree’s ability to produce new growth is a promising sign. The sight of green shoots emerging from the bark has become a source of inspiration for residents and visitors alike.

“It’s not just a tree,” said one Lahaina resident. “It’s a testament to the strength of our community and the beauty of nature’s resilience. If the Banyan tree can survive this, so can we.”

The Banyan tree’s journey of renewal has already begun to redefine what it means to endure and thrive after adversity. As Lahaina rebuilds, the tree’s recovery serves as a living reminder of hope, perseverance, and the interconnectedness of life.

The Renewal of the Banyan Tree

Did you know that the Banyan tree is recovering from the 2023 wildfires?

In the weeks following the fire, arborists, ecologists, and volunteers rallied to assess the tree’s condition and provide care. Despite the burns and damage to its extensive root system, the Banyan tree began to show signs of resilience. New shoots emerged from its bark, a powerful reminder of nature’s ability to heal and adapt.

“This tree is a living symbol of Lahaina’s spirit,” said one local arborist. “Its recovery mirrors our community’s journey to rebuild and move forward.”

The effort to save the Banyan tree became a unifying project for the people of Maui and supporters worldwide. Donations poured in to fund specialized care, including soil restoration, irrigation systems, and nutrient treatments. Volunteers gathered to clear debris, monitor its progress, and share stories about the tree’s significance.

For many, the Banyan tree is more than just a natural wonder; it’s a treasure chest of memories. Couples have exchanged vows beneath its canopy, families have picnicked in its shade, and festivals have brought the community together around its sprawling trunk. Preserving the tree honors these cherished moments while also nurturing hope for the future.

How are the holidays celebrated in Hawaii?

Here are three more holiday traditions you can see on the island of Lahaina!

1. Hawaiian-Style Feasting

Holiday feasts on Maui bring together a delightful mix of Hawaiian, Asian, and Western culinary traditions. Families often gather for a luau-style feast, featuring dishes such as kalua pig (slow-roasted pork), poi (mashed taro), poke (raw fish salad), and local desserts like haupia (coconut pudding). For Christmas dinner, many families also enjoy dishes like roast turkey or honey-glazed ham, with tropical sides like pineapple or guava sauces. Bringing Ohana together (family and friends) makes for fun get-togethers. 

2. Cultural Craft Markets and Local Art

During the holiday season, there will be several craft fairs and art markets on island, where local artisans showcase handmade goods, including traditional Hawaiian quilts, koa wood carvings, and shell jewelry. These markets provide an opportunity to purchase unique, locally made gifts while supporting the community’s artists and craftsmen. 

3. Santa Makes it to the Islands

Even Santa (Kanakaloka, as he’s known in Hawaii) finds his way to Hawaii, but he tends to add his own island flair to the holiday season. Every holiday season, Santa returns via his outrigger canoe, rather than sleigh. Sporting his slippers (flip-flops) and shorts and waving his Shaka, he lets residents and visitors know they’re celebrating island style.

Lahaina Holiday Traditions, Part 1

How are the holidays celebrated in Hawaii?

Here are a few holiday traditions you can see on the island of Maui. 

1. “Hawaiian” Christmas Trees

Palm trees aren’t the only kind of trees that grow in Hawaii. There are two types of pines that thrive in Hawaii—the Norfolk Island pine (Araucaria heterophylla) and the Cook pine (Araucaria columnaris). Although neither are native to Hawaii, they are native to other Pacific islands. Cook pines are native to New Caledonia in the South Pacific, and there are many Cook pines throughout the island of Maui. Norfolk Island pines, often called the “Hawaiian Christmas tree,” are native to Norfolk Island. This island, an external territory of Australia, sits between New Zealand and New Caledonia.  Many families pick one of these for their Christmas trees, and many stop by their stores and get their Christmas trees from the mainland. Several containers are shipped every December to the island so residents can partake in their own Christmas tree lighting celebration. 

2. Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremonies

Every December, the Lahaina Banyan tree is adorned with thousands of twinkling lights, welcoming locals and visitors to gather and witness the lighting ceremony. This fun gathering also included live music, hula performances, and festive food from local vendors.

Unfortunately, due to the Lahaina Fire, the annual and most iconic holiday event will not happen this year. However, the Harvest at Kumalani Chapel had a tree lighting and drone show on Sunday, December 1st for residents and visitors. The Grand Wailea will hold a holiday marketplace and tree lighting ceremony on December 16th from 4-8pm. Tree lighting will happen at 7pm. 

3. Mele Kalikimaka: Hawaiian Holiday Music

“Mele Kalikimaka” is the Hawaiian way of saying "Merry Christmas," and music plays a big role in the holiday season. From traditional Hawaiian instruments like the ukulele and slack-key guitar to festive carols sung in both Hawaiian and English. There are also local choirs and school groups that perform at community gatherings. Always a favorite of mine is the 12 days of Christmas- Hawaiian style.
